The Innovators Issue: Junya Ishigama's genre-busting architecture, Sidewalk Labs and the future of the city, and more!

At the Propeller Centre on Toronto’s trendy West Queen West strip, Bruce Mau’s design team set up shop to address the hundreds of grievances and grumbles submitted to the Harbourfront Centre through a call last summer for, well, complaints.

These gripes – about everything from the service on our public transit system to displeasure with our new mayor and from unruly roommates to poor cell phone etiquette (sample: “It’s called a cell phone, not a yell phone”) – led to the foundation of the Toronto Complaints Choir. At the encore performance last night, the choir operatically belted out Toronto Complains!”

“Nobody signals in their cars/ No good 30s singles’ bars/ Why do the Maple Leafs always lose?/ I hate getting tiny rocks in my shoes” – such are the lyrics provided by Toronto’s biggest complainers.

On massive bulletin boards lining the wall of the centre, BMD divided the complaints according to topic and then took it one step further. For topics such as sleep (or lack thereof), the team presented their findings on sleep deprivation. For those of us who speed walk down the sidewalk (yes, including yours truly), BMD displayed their research into sidewalk rage and a breakdown of the fastest walkers to the slowest. As promised, creative solutions are also on the table; a personal favourite: “No one dies wishing they’d slept more.”

For those planning to stop by, there are still stickie notes for you to fill out your own complaints, or, more helpfully, solutions. Pop in until Sunday, July 31, to contribute and see the work in progress.

The Propellor Centre is located at 984 Queen St. W. in Toronto.
